"PHONY PONY MUSTANG INSTRUCTIONS"

Yes, there is a Phony Pony Mustang Dragster resin model already on the market.
The problem with that model is..... it's in 1/24 scale, it's too long, it has the wrong wheel base,
the wrong wheel wells, the cut out for the roll bar is cut back too far.... I could go on & on..... but, It's just all WRONG !
I can't build an accurate version using that resin body.
My goal here is to build a correct Phony Pony Mustang Dragster.

I've been purchasing "glue bomb" 1966 Mustang Fastback bodies for the last 8 years saving up to do this project.
I'll start with this photo to show all the correct wheel base measurements and length of body.
Along with the 4- original AMT 1966 Mustang Fastback 1/25 scale bodies.
Each body was sectioned and was mated together to create the Phony Pony Mustang body.

Starting with the best of the main bodies, the rear wheel wells were cut out and raised 4 scale inches and then moved forward 12".

A filler panel from another body was added to the rear.

I'll need to stretch the front clip 34 scale inches, so I cut off the front clip from the main body,
then added a new front clip that will be 12 " longer.

a third front clip is added with another 12" stretch.

3 hoods are added for the 34" stretch and everything is re-surfaced.

To start the front wheel wells, I removed all the lips from the body.

Front wheel wells were raised 4 scale inches.
I used a bottle to get the over sized radius needed and then I added plastic strip to the curve to use for a lip.
I'm not adding any putty at this point because of all the sanding required will most likely break the putty away from the body with all the movement.

After careful measuring, it was decided that 16" will need to be removed from the center of the length of the body.

Body was narrowed by 16".

Filler panel is added behind bumper, sheet plastic is added to the rear window for a soon to be done "Window Recess".
Rear bumper is also shortened at this time.

Sheet plastic is also added to the windshield area for a "Window Recess".
Although this dragster will not require any glass, I want the window recess' there as they are on the 1:1 fiberglass body.

Now that most of the body sanding is complete, I will go back to the front oversized wheel lips.
Using pinstripe tape to mask off the lip & the body.

Before I start the putting on the wheel lips, I wanted to make the air foil on the front clip.
Using brass sheet, I hand formed the foil and mounted it to the body.
A grill block out was made from sheet plastic is inserted. Block out headlights are also added.

First coat of putty.... 2 coats were needed with some minor touch ups at the end.

The side windows also have window recess' on them, so more sheet plastic was used.
I also cut out the front & rear window recess; at this point.

Checking the stance and body work from earlier.

After cutting new lines in roof, doors & cowl, the first coat of primer is on.

This is the Dragster chassis that I will need to replicate in scale.

Starting the chassis.... I looked at every dragster chassis I have and it was decided that the AMT Don Garlits "Wynns Jammer"
was the best option for a frame (due to the driver location).
Here the body is suspended over the Dragster frame to get the correct wheelbase. Seat is from a Monogram Snake & Mongoose Dragster.

I began to simulate the fiber glass Inner door panels.
These panels will be used to mount the body to the chassis and to set the ride height.

After gathering up all the parts needed, assembly began on the chassis, engine, driver, wheels & tires.
Of course I'll be using the best parts available through Speed City Resin!

Door panels will rest on extended square tube frame rails.

Here is the painted body painted before adding any decals.

REVIEW:
I didn't cast this master model because the market has already been saturated
by an inaccurate AFXNSCALE resin model and now copied by Compition Resin.

So, this will be the only correct 1/25 scale "Phony Pony Mustang Dragster" ever made !
But with all the photos and text, maybe you could do one yourself?
